Reasons Behind Jammed Doors in Your House

Jammed Doors Australia

Door jamming is a commonplace problem that most homeowners encounter from time to time. Jammed doors that are difficult to close and open often indicate a foundation heave or foundation settlement.

Most homeowners take the opening and closing of the door for granted. You will be surprised to know that even less than an inch of incongruity will cause significant problems opening and closing the door. The same is also true for jammed windows. These cause privacy issues and need to be tackled with the help of professionals who are adept in fixing stuck doors and even when you find that the window is stuck.

Reasons behind stuck doors and windows

  • Movement of the foundation: The foundation plays a crucial role in maintaining the perfect vertical position of the house. If the home experiences foundation heave or foundation settlement, the house’s structure will morph with pressure changes. It can either be one or all of the downwards, upwards or lateral movements of the house that will cause the doors and windows to be stuck and jammed.

  • Levels of humidity: The moisture content of the area plays a significant role in stuck and jammed doors and windows. Moisture equals expansion, especially in wood. It is an organic material; therefore, the higher is the moisture level, the more absorption of water by the wood, causing it to swell abnormally. Moisture also can create a tight pull and push instead of complete misalignment.

  • Negligent behaviour: This is a manmade issue. If doors are slammed regularly or even if the door is pulled while the latch is disengaged, it will have a devastating effect on the door’s frame and cause problems with jamming. Ensure that the doors are closed and opened gently. Also, ensure that kids do not swing on the doors, play puling matches with the door, or kick the door.

If you pay a little attention to the condition of your doors and windows, you can be in an excellent position to spot problems and nip them in the bud.
