A wall crack, whether in plaster, concrete, or drywall, can be an eyesore. Wall cracks appear on the natural settling of the house over a period and can be repaired over a weekend. While fixing these cracks as a DIY project, a home inspection by an engineer is the best resource.

Here is how you can fix wall crack repairs:

Fixing cracking of walls

Drywall crack fixing:

This is the easiest of all. A utility knife is used to cut a notch along the crack’s length. Loose material is vacuumed out, and the crack is covered with joint compound, joint tape, or paper tape, after which the second coat of joint compound is to be applied. Left to dry overnight, it is sanded till smooth. After wall repair, you can use paint or wallpaper to the drywall.

Plaster wall:

A house crack in a plaster wall is treated with a joint compound like in the above drywall repairs. Drill holes of 3/16th inch diameter penetrating the plaster every three inches along the crack. Dust and debris are vacuumed from the holes, after which an adhesive conditioner is sprayed over it. Allow the dwell time as instructed and then start fixing from the lowest point on the wall. Ensure that the adhesive is injected into every hole. Plaster rings are attached with a drill and then cured over a day or two. A coat of joint compound is applied to the site and then sanded.

Concrete walls:

For this, an epoxy resin kit is needed. It makes a watertight seal in the site of the crack and lasts for a very long time. Equal parts of epoxy and hardener are mixed. The mixed epoxy is spread evenly over the cracks. The injection port flanges also have to be covered by epoxy resin. It takes 6-10 hours to cure, after which liquid concrete repair is injected into these ports, till the liquid oozes back from the holes. The port is plugged after this and left to cure for five days.

While it looks easy, in reality, house crack repairs require skill and expertise. If you think you do not have the skill, it is best to hire a professional for wall repair
